Private Lessons

After completing Free Skate 3, the next step is to start private skate lessons! The SDRC offers a variety of private ice skating lessons.

All of our coaches have 10+ years of experience and are able to make you the best skater possible.  Please check the Coaches & Instructors Board in the Ice Arena for contact information.

Snowplow Sam 1-3

Snowplow Sam classes are for students ages 3-5.  Upon completion of Snowplow Sam, students should advance to Basic Skills classes. Helmet and now clothes are suggested.

Snowplow Sam 1
Sit and stand up with skates on – off Ice
Sit and stand up – on Ice
March in place
March forward (8–10 steps)
March, then glide on two feet
Dip in place

Snowplow Sam 2
March followed by a long glide
Dip while moving
Backward walking, toes turned inward, shifting weight (4-6 steps)
Backward wiggles (6 in a row)
Forward swizzles (2-3 in a row)
Beginning snowplow stop motion-in place or holding onto barrier
Two-foot hop, in place (optional)

Snowplow Sam 3
Forward skating (8–10 strides)
Forward one-foot glide, two times skater’s height

Basic Skills 1-6

Basic Skills classes are for students ages 6 and older. If a student has never taken a lesson before and is 6 years or older, start with Basic 1.  These  classes will teach the fundamentals of skating.

After completion of Basic 6, students are encouraged to take private lessons from one of our many talented staff coaches.  Please feel free to talk to our staff.  Students can continue to Specialty classes.

Sit on ice and stand up
March forward across ice
Forward 2 foot glide
Dip
Forward Swizzles – 6-8 in a row
Backward wiggles – 6-8 in a row
Beginning snowplow stop on two feet or one foot.
Bonus Skill: Two-foot hop in place

Basic 2
Scooter pushes-R and L
Forward one-foot glides-R and L
Backward two-foot glide-Glide the length of skater’s height
Rocking Horse (one forward swizzle, one backward swizzle)- Repeat twice
Backward swizzles- 6-8 in a row
Two-foot turns from forward to backward in place- clockwise and counterclockwise

Beginning forward stroking showing correct use of blade

Freestyle Class 1-4 is being offered on Thursdays at 5:45pm. You will need to join the Utah Figure Skating Club (UFSC) and your ice time is included for the whole season.  You will receive other amenities for being a UFSC club member.

Skating Skills:
Forward inside open mohawk from a standstill position (R to L and L to R)
Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glides (landing position), clockwise and counterclockwise
Backward outside edge to a forward outside edge transition, clockwise and counterclockwise
Two forward crossovers into a forward inside mohawk, step down and cross behind, step into one backward crossover and step to a forward inside edge, clockwise and counterclockwise
Spins:
One-foot upright spin, optional entry and free-foot position (min. three revolutions)
Jumps:
Mazurka (R and L)
Waltz Jump
Bonus Skill:
Backward inside pivots, clockwise and counterclockwise

Free Skate 1
Skating Skills:
Forward power stroking, clockwise and counterclockwise
Basic forward outside and forward inside consecutive edges (four to six consecutive edges)

Upright spin, entry from back crossovers (min. four to six revolutions)
Jumps:
Half flip

Alternating forward outside and inside spirals on a continuous axis (two sets)
Basic backward outtside and backward inside consecutive edges (four to six consecutive edges)

Recreation Hockey

YEAR ROUND

Sunday Stick & Puck is an open hockey session that allows players to work on any hockey skill they want in a relaxed atmosphere. Games are not allowed and each session is limited to 25 skaters and four goalies. Full equipment is required. 

Price:  $7 per Player; Goalies Free

Registration: Check in at the front desk the day of

Schedule:   Sundays 11:30am-12:45pm year round

 

SUMMER ONLY

Saturday Stick & Puck is an open hockey session that allows players to work on any hockey skill they want in a relaxed atmosphere. Games are not allowed and each session is limited to 25 skaters and four goalies. Full equipment is required.
