Private Lessons

After completing Free Skate 3, the next step is to start private skate lessons! The SDRC offers a variety of private ice skating lessons.

All of our coaches have 10+ years of experience and are able to make you the best skater possible.  Please check the Coaches & Instructors Board in the Ice Arena for contact information.

Snowplow Sam 1-3

Snowplow Sam classes are for students ages 3+5.  Upon completion of Snowplow Sam, students should advance to Basic Skills classes. Helmet and now clothes are suggested.

Sit and stand up with skates on – off Ice
Sit and stand up – on Ice
March in place
March forward (8–10 steps)
March, then glide on two feet
Dip in place

Snowplow Sam 2
March followed by a long glide
Dip while moving
Backward walking, toes turned inward, shifting weight (4-6 steps)
Backward wiggles (6 in a row)
Forward swizzles (2-3 in a row)
Beginning snowplow stop motion-in place or holding onto barrier
Two-foot hop, in place (optional)

Snowplow Sam 3
Forward skating (8–10 strides)
Forward one-foot glide, two times skater’s height (R and L)

Basic Skills 1-6

Basic Skills classes are for students ages 6 and older. If a student has never taken a lesson before and is 6 years or older, start with Basic 1.  These  classes will teach the fundamentals of skating.

After completion of Basic 6, students are encouraged to take private lessons from one of our many talented staff coaches.  Please feel free to talk to our staff.  Students can continue to Specialty classes.

Sit on ice and stand up

Dip
Forward Swizzles – 6-8 in a row
Backward wiggles – 6-8 in a row
Beginning snowplow stop on two feet or one foot.

Basic 2
Scooter pushes-R and L
Forward one-foot glides-R and L
Backward two-foot glide-Glide the length of skater’s height
Rocking Horse (one forward swizzle, one backward swizzle)- Repeat twice
Backward swizzles- 6-8 in a row
Two-foot turns from forward to backward in place- clockwise and counterclockwise

Pre Free Skate-Free Skate 6:

Free skate classes are for students that have completed Basic 6 and are looking for more performance based training.

Learn to Skate for Hockey 1-4 & Power Skating:

Learn to Skate for Hockey is for students ages 5 and older that are interested in hockey.  If children are 5 years and younger, they should complete Snowplow Sam 3 before registering for Hockey.  Upon completion of Hockey 4, they should then make the transition into Learn to Play Hockey.  Necessary Equipment: Hockey Skates and HECC approved hockey helmet. 

Free Skate Class Descriptions

Pre-Free Skate
Skating Skills:
Forward inside open mohawk from a standstill position (R to L and L to R)
Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glides (landing position), clockwise and counterclockwise
Backward outside edge to a forward outside edge transition, clockwise and counterclockwise
Two forward crossovers into a forward inside mohawk, step down and cross behind, step into one backward crossover and step to a forward inside edge, clockwise and counterclockwise
Spins:
One-foot upright spin, optional entry and free-foot position (min. three revolutions)
Jumps:
Mazurka (R and L)
Waltz Jump
Bonus Skill:
Backward inside pivots, clockwise and counterclockwise

Free Skate 1
Skating Skills:
Forward power stroking, clockwise and counterclockwise
Basic forward outside and forward inside consecutive edges (four to six consecutive edges)
Backward outside three-turns (R and L)
Spins:
Upright spin, entry from back crossovers (min. four to six revolutions)
Jumps:
Half flip
Toe loop
Bonus Skill:
Waltz jump-side toe hop-waltz jump sequence, or waltz jump-ballet jump-toe loop sequence

Free Skate 2

Alternating forward outside and inside spirals on a continuous axis (two sets)
Basic backward outtside and backward inside consecutive edges (four to six consecutive edges)

Beginning back spin (up to two revolutions)

South Davis Ice Rink

The South Davis Recreation Center offers a wide variety of activities for people of all ages. Our world-class ice rink hosts many skating competitions, hockey leagues and community events. We offer a Learn-To-Skate program as well as open skate times available for everyone.

Off Ice Conditioning Class

Free with purchase of a Learn to Skate Session.
For Students currently enrolled in Basic 6-Free Skate 6 & Hockey 3-4

Monday & Wednesday 5:15pm-5:50pm

Class will meet upstairs behind the bleachers in the Ice Rink.  Class offers strength training and flexibility to make all students stronger and more agile skaters.  Must have work-out clothes and running shoes.

Winter/Spring  Session

Freestyle  sessions are 1 hour.  Patrons are welcome to skate for as long as they would like but need to pay for multiple sessions.  Patrons cannot divide two sessions and pay just one session fee.  Freestyle sessions are not included in our memberships.

Recreation Hockey

Stick & Puck is an open hockey session that allows players to work on any hockey skill they want in a relaxed atmosphere. Games are not allowed and each session is limited to 25 skaters and four goalies. Full equipment is required. 

Price:  $6 per Player; Goalies Free

Registration: Check in at the front desk the day of

Schedule:   Sundays 11:30am-12:45pm year round
