Learn to Swim & Preschool 

The Red Cross has developed swimming lessons for kids and adults that allow everyone the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, at their own pace. Available across the country, Learn-to-Swim classes are taught by certified, knowledgeable and caring instructors who can help swimmers at every level feel comfortable in the water and progress to the next level.

Parent Child 

This program is designed for infants 6 months old up to toddlers 3 years old. Classes are designed for children to obtain comfort in the water and provide parents with knowledge & skills to orient your child to aquatic environments. This course is an excellent way to prepare your children for our learn to swim program.

Private Swim Lessons 

Do you or your child need personalized attention? One on one instruction allows students to receive more feedback & attention from one of our certified instructors. Students can progress at a faster and steady rate in private lessons. All Private swim lesson instructors are WSI certified and have the knowledge, ability and experience to improve all levels of swimming. Open for all ages!

Schedule:
Private lessons are scheduled on a monthly basis by instructor availability. You may sign up for the instructor of your choice based on availability. Registration can be done online now!

Instructor schedules are available one week before the beginning of each month.

Adaptive 

In this special needs program you’ll receive individual and personalized instruction based on experience and ability in the water. When possible, students are placed into regular classes and appropriate swim levels. It is excellent training and preparation for Special Olympics competition or unique opportunity for those with special needs to learn to swim.

Springboard Diving 

The South Davis Recreation Center provides beginner – intermediate levels of springboard diving. Teaching the skills to dive on one and three meter boards.

Adult Lessons 

Beginner & Intermediate

Each lesson is designed to focus on the essential building blocks of swimming that will help a swimmer at any skill level become more proficient, avoid injury, and develop life-long skills. Taught by South Davis Masters Coaches.

Class Descriptions

Learn To Swim: Ages 6+

Level 1
This class is an introduction to water skills. Designed for the beginner swimmer who cannot submerge in the water.

Level 2
This class is learning fundamental aquatic skills. For swimmers who have mastered these skills: Enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times then safely exit the water. Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (with support)

Level 3
Stroke Development. For swimmers who can: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a floating or treading position for 15 seconds, then swim on back for 5 body lengths. Then move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.

Level 4
Stroke Improvement. For those who have mastered: Jump into deep water from the side, rotate one full turn and then swim front crawl for 25 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute. Push off streamlined, then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.

Level 5
Stroke Refinement. For swimmers who can: Perform a feet first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. Submerge and swim a distance of 3-5 body lengths without hyperventilating.

Level 6 Fitness Swimmer
Fitness Swimmer - This class enhances swimming skills and includes some basic competitive techniques. For swimmers who have mastered: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards using efficient and appropriate turns. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 50 yards using efficient and appropriate turns.

Level 6 Water Safety
Water Safety- This class enhances swimming skills and includes some basic water safety techniques. For swimmers who have mastered: Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 50 yards using efficient and appropriate turns.
Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards using efficient and appropriate turns.

Preschool: Ages 3-5

Preschool Swim 1

This class is an introduction to water skills. Designed for the beginner swimmer who cannot submerge in the water.

Preschool Swim 2

This class is learning fundamental aquatic skills. For swimmers who can enter independently, using the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for at least 3 seconds then safely exit the water.  While in shallow water, glide on front at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds then recover to a vertical position (This part of the assessment can be performed with support) 

Preschool Swim 3

Stroke Development. For swimmers who have mastered: Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 15 seconds then recover to a vertical position. Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position. Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming on front for 3 body lengths.

Preschool Swim 4

Stroke Improvement. Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a  treading or floating position for 15 seconds, roll to back, float for 5 seconds then return to a vertical position. Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming for 5 body lengths. (You may assist the child when taking a breath.)

**Once a swimmer has PASSED preschool swim 4 successfully, the swimmer should take to Learn to Swim level 4 and advance from there**

Parent - Child: Ages 6 Mos to 3 Years 

Level 1. This parent and child class is a beginning class for children with no experience or no comfort in the water.

Child must be at 6 months to 3 years old and must have a parent/guardian in the water for all class sessions.  Plastic pants AND swim diapers are required for children not toilet trained.

Level 2. This parent and child class is a more advanced adjustment to the water. For children with experience or comfort in the water or who have passed Level 1.

Child must be 18 months to 3 years old and must have a parent/guardian in the water for all class sessions.  Plastic pants AND swim diapers are required for children not toilet trained.

Diving 

Diving

Diving 1
This class is for those interested and have little or no experience in springboard diving as well as those with some experience diving. Student must be able to pass level 3 exit skills.

Diving 2
This class is designed for those with experience in springboard diving or have passed Diving 1. Student will build on skills/dives learned in Diving 1.
Student must be able to pass level 3 exit skills.
